OVC’s Pick of the Week: Out of all the contests, our favorite this week is the eHarmony ‘What is Compatibility?’ Video Contest, brought to you by Genero. This is another commercial departure for Genero, which usually focuses on music video contests. This time, they’re asking filmmakers to create videos based on eHarmony’s Compatibility Matching System, including traits such as humor, communication style and romantic passion. Highlight one of six compatibility traits for a shot at a $10,000 Grand Prize. And with 11 other cash prizes up for grabs, there’s a lot of opportunity for you to walk away happy. Open worldwide, 13 and older, and due May 29th.

Introducing the newest video contest site: Project ED.
Did you notice? Last week marked the launch of a brand new video contest site. Unlike similar websites in the space, Project ED isn’t seeking to promote big brands with slick commercials. Instead, they are turning to filmmakers to create short, educational videos on a wide array of school-appropriate topics (think science, math, the language arts).
While competitions are open to filmmakers 13 and older, their platform provides an especially GREAT opportunity for younger filmmakers because First Place cash prizes will be awarded to Students (ages 13-18) and Adults/Teachers (19 and older). This means teens won’t have to compete against adults, and everyone will have a fair chance to win based on their skill level!
Project ED has launched with three briefs (see links below) and will be adding new topics and competitions to the site as time goes on. While competitions are currently only open to US and Canadian residents, they hope to expand them internationally in the future.

New and Notable Video Contests - Week of April 8
Biggest cash prize: It’s a tie: $25,000 in two video contests this week! First up, the ‘Me on GNC’ Photo & Video Contest. GNC is seeking inspiring stories about using their products to achieve health and wellness. Open to US residents, 18 and older, and due June 30th. Next, we have the Looking@Democracy Challenge, which is open to all US residents. This competition is seeking creative media pieces about strengthening American democracy. Your submission can come in many formats such as short videos, audio stories, animation, music videos, public service announcements, infographics, graphic art, even Facebook and iPhone apps. Outside of the big cash prizes for 1st-3rd Place, there are special cash prizes for students and other young people, so if you’re young but have BIG IDEAS, check it out! Hurry, entries are due April 30th.
Best prize: OK, we’ve got two options here too, and they’re both awesome for filmmakers looking to level up on their equipment. First and foremost is a shot to win $65,000 in filmmaking gear, including the RED EPIC-X PRO COLLECTION, in the 2013 HDVideoPro ‘Emerging Pro’ Competition. The catch here is that you have to be a film or photography student in college, OR have less than 5 years of professional experience, PLUS be a US resident in order to participate. Here’s how it goes: Make an eye-catching 5 minute short. Narrative or not, your filmmaking chops have gotta shine if you’re gonna wow the judges. There will be a Round 2 if you’re named as a finalist, but in order to make the cut, you first need to get your submission in by August 15th. Another great option is the Adblock Plus Creative Challenge. It’s open worldwide, 16 and older, and offers a prize of $5000 of your choice of video equipment. Adblock Plus invites you to create an anti-advertising ad that reflects the ethos of their browser extension service. Due May 31st.

OVC’s Pick of the Week: Out of all the contests, our favorite this week is the ‘Lurk’ Vocab Video Contest, brought to you by Project ED. Project ED is the new video contest site on the block, and their aim is to create a library of educational videos on topics from science to language arts and more. One thing that sets them apart is all their competitions currently offer grand prizes to two age categories: students and adults/teachers. For this specific competition, they are seeking 60-second videos that illustrate the definition of the verb ‘LURK’. Capture the spooky vibe of ‘lurk’ in a visually captivating way, and you could earn up to $1000. Open to US and Canadian residents, 13 and older. Due May 1st.
