Choose 1 of 4 Internet safety topics and make a video!
Due April 30th, 2010 -
You’re on the Web all the time: updating profiles, blogging, texting, downloading, gaming and shopping. You’ve heard, read or seen things about cyberbullying, sexting, scams, spam and posting stuff you shouldn’t. And maybe you’ve learned a thing or two about how to be online and be safe and responsible while you’re there.
That’s why we’re inviting you to join our video competition. Tell us what being safe and smart online means to you, so your friends, family and fellow citizens can learn to be safer and smarter, too. If you have a story to share, we want to hear it!
Shoot a short video that tells your story about staying safe and secure online and you could win $10,000, or other cash prizes.
Create and upload a short original video in any style – from a serious confessional, to an educational PSA to a hilarious re-enactment – on one of these Internet safety topics:
1. Keeping a good rep online
While social networking sites are used by millions (yes, even parents) to make friends and keep them up-to-date, sometimes sharing too much personal info or embarrassing photos or videos of yourself or others can lead to risks like contact from strangers, ruining your chances at a college or job and harming your or another’s reputation. TMI, for real!
2. Staying clear of unwanted contact
Cyberbullying (online harassment of others) and online grooming (when sexual predators try to convince underage persons to have offline relations with them) are just a few examples of unwanted online contact. Tell us how you keep yourself (and others) safe and avoid unwanted contact altogether.
3. Accessing (legal) content that’s age-appropriate
You know what we’re talking about — websites that are offensive, violent, pornographic, full of foul language, or inappropriate for certain ages, and even sites that encourage people to download or share illegally copied movies, music or video games. If you’ve been there and learned the hard way, or if your job is to keep someone else from doing it, we want to know!
4. Keeping the cybercriminals out
Sometimes it’s necessary to use personal info to take advantage of the Web, but it can also make you vulnerable to computer security issues like identity theft, scams, spam, viruses and other bad stuff. Spyware can infect your computer just by visiting a website that was hacked, and ID thieves can get your info by stealing it online, as well as by tricking you into giving it to them. Send us your bank account and routing number and we’ll tell you more. Ah, almost!
