Due May 28th, 2019 - For well over a century, National Geographic has been the standard bearer of exploration and discovery - a window to new cultures, new worlds, and new creatures, regaling us with the larger-than-life tales of professional explorers and superhuman adventurers. It is National Geographic that introduced us to Jane Goodall’s groundbreaking primate research, revolutionizing our understanding of human nature, and it is National Geographic that took us along with Alex Honnold as he became the first free solo climber to ever summit the impossible vertical cliffs of Yosemite’s El Capitan. In all this, they have always embraced the notion that not only can the natural world be understood - but that it needs our protection.

Normally, it is the voices of scientists and adventurers that drive the message - but the same spark of curiosity and tenacity that drives these explorers is alive in all of us.

You see, we don’t need a special certification to take part in exploring the world around us. We, the Everyday Explorers, are each making our own unique contributions to the mission that National Geographic has advanced. Whether it’s cataloging wildlife in our city parks, kayaking down our local rivers, or leading recycling efforts in our neighborhoods - there are unlimited ways that we can embrace the core National Geographic values of curiosity, exploration, and sustainability.

This is the inspiration behind National Geographic’s Everyday Explorer initiative. This new initiative will identify 8 to 10 individuals and families who embody National Geographic’s values, and it will bring them together as brand ambassadors with the goal of creating social media content to support exploration, awareness, and advocacy in all its forms. With the globe turning its their eyes to Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter, it is there that the mission of National Geographic must be spread.

WHAT IS NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC LOOKING TO MAKE?

In short: videos and photos for Instagram, Facebook & Twitter. If you are selected as an Ambassador, to help you make the most of that content, you will be paired with either a Tongal editor or a local Tongal filmmaker on an on-going basis, and together you will create a variety of short, informal videos and photos to share on your own social network accounts with a regular weekly cadence. The videos and photos will connect to a theme (like sustainability), which National Geographic will provide. For example, you might create an Instagram Story with a filmmaker that shows you and your family #trashtag-ing a garbage collection at your local hiking trailhead; or, you might share a nicely composed photo of your compost pile at home, which that filmmaker helped you reformat and edit so it looks great.

HOW CAN I BE A NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC AMBASSADOR?

Do you consider yourself intellectually curious, adventurous and open-minded? Do you share these values with your family and your loved ones? Are you the kind of person posting daily on Instagram or Twitter? Do you have a flock of followers tuning in to your outdoor escapades? If so, you should audition to be an ambassador! How? National Geographic wants to know:

What does National Geographic mean to you? You’re here because you’re a fan, or a member. But why? What’s your connection?
Are you an explorer? Exploration takes a lot of different forms, and most of it’s rooted in a natural curiosity. You can do it on your phone, in your backyard, or on the trail. In what ways are you embodying this action in your everyday life?
How is your family involved? We know family comes in every shape and size, but National Geographic would love to see individuals with families where everyone gets in on the fun.
What are your interests? Explorers cover pretty much every subject matter imaginable. What’s your area of interest?
