Due August 15th, 2017 - The editing session took all night, but now you’ve got a finely-tuned video with the exact pacing, audio levels, and coloring you imagined in pre-production. You’ve uploaded your video and you’re ready to share it with the world! But, aren’t you forgetting something?

Captions are one of the easiest additions you can make to your videos. The bonus here is that captions inherently make your work more accessible. There are so many people who use captions, such as those who are deaf or hard of hearing, but also people who are still learning the language your video is in. Not only is this an ethical step to take, but think of how many more people you can expand your audience to? It’s also helpful for viewers who might want some extra clarity on what is being said, or those who just enjoy reading along.

This week, Vimeo challenges you to create a video containing dialogue accompanied by *perfect* captions (because what’s the point if the captions are wrong?). The subject matter of the dialogue is totally up to you, as long as the video is under one minute and contains flawless captioning.

What might these “perfect” captions look like, you ask? Here are a few guidelines to follow:
*All words should be transcribed, and sounds should be described.
*Text has no more than 32 characters per line, including spaces.
*Only 1-2 lines of text per screen.

This framework will make your captions easier to read, without distracting from the action happening on screen. There are several ways to caption, but for more guidance on how to apply high-quality captions to your work, a trusted resource is this captioning key from the Described and Captioned Media Program, which was administered by the National Association of the Deaf and funded by the U.S. Department of Education.

To get a full understanding of how captions work with the Vimeo player, you can read the handy Help Center article devoted to exactly that! This also covers how your viewers will be able to enable captioning in the video player, and all of the languages we support.

Don’t worry, applying captions shouldn’t have to cost you a dime! If you’re on a budget, you can use a free tool, such as the Amara Editor, to create your files. Or you can use these instructions from 3Play Media on how to create SRT files or create WebVTT files, as these are the most commonly used caption files on Vimeo.

Some things to remember when creating and uploading your files:
*Vimeo does not support HTML customization for captioning.
*Check for any erroneous spaces between lines (they may look empty, but any extra spaces will render the file invalid).
*Make sure that the arrows between the timecodes do not contain em or en dashes. If your file contains these, an error message will appear when you attempt to upload it.

You can really let your imagination run wild with this one, so have fun (and proofread)!
